Pride

This image represents the sin 'Pride'. This sin was generally considered to be the original and most serious of the sins as it was deemed as the source of all others.

The sin ‘Pride’ is described as: the excessive love of one’s self, harbouring a desire to be more important or attractive than others and failing to acknowledge the good work of others.

This image was created with a combination of imagery such as peacock feathers, blue glitter, and the trademark Facebook ‘F’ all imposed on the chest and lower profile of a female figure. This all combines to represent what I see as being the major platforms for exhibiting pride in modern society. Broken down the piece includes: the obvious connection of the peacock feathers to the popular simile ‘as proud as a peacock’, the glitter representing how we are taught from an early age the importance to ‘shine’ and stand out from the crowd, Facebook being the predominant platform for boasting and the sharing of achievements for ‘likes’, therefore adding a new aspect of validating ones outbursts of pride. Finally the whole composition is overlaid by the female figure to symbolise the behaviour most animals embody when trying to impress which is to puff out their chests in a bid to draw attention to their attractiveness, as humans we are no different and tend to follow more or less exactly the same ritual of attraction.
