To Sin is a Group Effort

Though the language has all but disappeared, the concept of sin has become integral to our successful daily functioning. Advertising taps into lust as a basic tool of persuasion, social networks provide a platform for seamless displays of pride and the main objective of every educational endeavour is now not to simply enjoy the process but to obtain a highly paid job at the end, thus instilling greed into the young and malleable mindsets of children.

My work this year has focused mainly on the vanity of society and the impact of this on our moral values. Through digital photography I have created what I feel to be seven commercially aesthetic images representing each sins predominant presence in 21st century western society. These images include branding, objective and figurative references to present day influences that I feel have a sizeable impact on our moral value system and help towards the complete abolishment of values associated with the original sins.

From extensive research and casual observation carried out for this artwork I begin to worry that to embody more than half of the original seven sins is no longer perceived to be ‘sinful’, more so it is welcomed as being ‘ambitious’, ‘successful’, ‘admired’ or ‘desirable’.

Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall.” - William Shakespeare
